11 Interior Design Trends to Love in the New Year

Well, friends, I just returned from High Point Market where I saw ALL the goodies, which means… it’s time to share interior design trends!

I have 11 great finds to share with you today, but overall, I’d say the vibe at High Point Market was one of the most livable and comfortable I’ve seen in awhile — but I won’t spoil the surprise just yet!

In no particular order, here are the top 11 trends I think we’ll be seeing a lot more of in 2020.

1. Woven elements and natural fibers

2. Chairs made with rattan

Okay, I know rattan should be considered a “woven and natural element” but I was so surprised by the amount of rattan everywhere, that it deserves a bullet point all of its own. This is one show-stealing trend that I’m definitely not sad about.

3. Curved sofas, sectional, chairs, and benches

From swooping to subtle, furniture is getting curvy these days! I love this reinterpretation on a modern design that make the piece feel more approachable and cozy while maintaining that quintessential clean, crisp look.

4. Layered neutrals and rich, earthy color

I saw tons of rooms layered with neutrals (check out our post on timeless neutrals here!), with pops of black and warm, earthy tones. Expect to see more rust, scarlet, and mustard. And, as usual, lots of blue!

5. Block and printed textiles

Speaking of scarlet, blue, and mustard… I saw these colors put to good use as prints!

Every year I see various prints and patterns. Some have been nature-inspired, others have leaned toward cultural. This year: block prints and geometric rugs took reign. And of course, I could leave out these marblized swirl printed chairs which are positively mesmerizing.

6. Modular sofas and furniture

Furniture might be getting curvy, but it’s going modular too. I saw this look ALL over the place, from sofas to chairs. The designs are pretty classily done, too. Pieces like these are on trend but won’t go out of style any time soon.

7. Comfort as the priority

If you’re wondering, yes, I sat my tosh in as many sofas and chairs as I get find and tested them all out for you so that I could say this — furniture is getting comfy. I also loved how even the most comfortable designs were still totally stylish. Because life’s too short for a beautiful sofa no one wants to use, amiright? ;)

8. Overscaled statement lighting

Statement lighting is a big feature of High Point Market nearly every year, but it seems as if the “statement” has been getting bigger and bigger. This year, I saw tons of overscaled statement lighting in fun materials and designs.

If this is the look you want for your home, I highly recommend bringing in a professional who will help you find the perfect scale for your space and a piece that will endure the ages.

9. Decorative accents

In general, I saw things getting a lot more decorative, from textiles and embellishments to printed wallcoverings.

10. Performance fabrics were HUGE

Performance fabrics were huge. Comfort and livable furniture high-performance fabrics are not going anywhere. People are just too busy to deal with furniture that is not functioning for them, and most of us don’t live in museums.

Life is crazy and busy and messy, and we want furniture that’s going to come along for the ride with us and still look incredible. Who’s with me?!

11. My Personal Favorites…

Okay, I like all of the directions design is trending toward, but which of these designs am I really in love with?
